What is the TearCare system?

The TearCare System is one of the latest treatments on the market that offers relief to those with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, Dry Eyes, and Blepharitis.

It is a wearable eyelid technology device that administers gentle heat directly to the meibomian glands to liquefy the meibum, remove blockages and stimulate tear production.

What is Meibomian gland dysfunction?

Meibomian glands are the oil glands that line the edge of your eyelids, near your eyelashes. Around 25 to 40 meibomian glands line the upper eyelid and 20 to 30 line the lower eyelid. These glands secrete the oil that coats the eyes and tear film, to prevent the tears from evaporating too quickly.

This condition occurs when the oil glands become blocked with thick secretions. This prevents a normal flow of oil and leads to a reduced quantity. The oil that successfully flows through the glands can be crusty or poor in quality and may cause irritation.

Meibomian gland dysfunction often does not present with any symptoms in its early stages. However, if the condition progresses without treatment, it can cause dry eye symptoms and/or inflammation of the eyelid.

How does tear care system work?

The TearCare treatment involves the use of two flexible eyelid devices that are placed on the upper and lower eyelids. These devices are made of a soft, comfortable material that conforms to the natural shape of the eye. Unlike many other treatment methods, during your TearCare treatment, your eyes will remain open and blinking normally. The process takes just a few minutes(usually 15-20 min).

TearCare is safe and effective. The devices feature temperature sensors that ensure even heat distribution. The devices and the patient are also monitored carefully throughout the procedure.

Why TearCare treatment?

Patients report that they find TearCare to be comfortable and pain-free. The Meibomian Glands themselves can be restored to proper function by this treatment process. The patient's eyes can become appropriately moist, relieving the challenging and even painful chronic dry eye condition.

How long does TearCare last?

Studies have shown TearCare® can provide dry eye relief from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) for 6 months to a year.
